Reporting to the University Bursar, the Assistant Bursar is there to effectively and efficiently manage the financial and other resources of the university. He/she should be able to communicate accurately and timely the financial performance, financial position and cash flows of the university and its subsidiaries. Further, the position exists to assist with risk assessment, governance and other compliances matters including scanning the external and/ the internal economic environment as it affects the institution and its other entities.

Desired Attributes:

  • A degree in Accounting.
  • Professional qualifications such as ACCA/CIMA/CA/CPA.
  • A Master in Accounting or Business Administration is an added advantage.
  • Extensive knowledge of Sage Evolution.
  • At least 5 years of financial and management reporting experience.
  • Good analytical and critical skills to solve complex and dynamic finance issues
  • Demonstrated experience working and delivering outcomes under pressure.
  • A team player, providing support and encouragement.
  • Organized and process-oriented, with attention to detail, and able to prioritize workloads.
  • Responsive to changing priorities and demands.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepares monthly accounts in accordance with international accounting standards (IFRS) and Generally acceptable Accounting Standards (GAAP).
  • Reviews the trial balance and reconciles the main and sub-ledgers.
  • Maintains cashbooks and prepares bank reconciliations.
  • Maintains the asset register.
  • Perform income and expenditure analysis, creditors’ analysis, and debtor analysis.
  • Prepares journals, reviews, and authorizes journals originated by subordinates.
  • Checks and approves transactions and aligns them with the budget, legal framework, tax provisions, donor requirements, and internal policies and procedures.
  • Preparation of weekly and monthly cash flow reports.
  • Monitors internal controls and operating procedures to ensure compliance and ensures continuous improvement of the same.
  • Budget preparation and review of unit budgets
  • Prepares financial forecasts and analysis reports of new and existing academic programs, projects, products, and services as may be required.
  • Provides insights about spending trends, savings initiatives, and revenue-generating opportunities.
  • Help determine and cost key university indicators, i.e., minimum class sizes, minimum courses per lecturer, stock levels, payment plan terms and levels, and breakeven points for products and services within university sections.
  • Cost-benefit analysis of various decisions within the university.
  • Monitors department staff’s computer system’s access levels and supervises data storage.
  • Supervises the stocktake and reconciles stocktake schedules.
  • Prepares and maintains the audit file and audit schedules.
  • Represents a point person during ordinary and other special audits.
  • Assists in scanning the operating environment to ensure continued sustainability.
  • Sits and serves on specific university committees
  • Reviews the work of subordinates and evaluates performance.
