Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the following position that has arisen at the Women’s University in Africa, Harare campus:

RESPONSIBILITIES/JOB DESCRIPTION/KEY TASKS

  • Works closely with the Registrar to provide sound strategic legal advice to the University community, based on subject-matter expertise in corporate and commercial, intellectual property, insurance, construction and labor and employment law, as well as other areas affecting University operations:
  • Monitors, reviews and provides practical and unbiased advise and representation on procedural and contractual arrangements:
  • Ensures the provision of expert, timely, practical, effective and consistent legal and strategic advice to clients within the University community and ensure consistency in decision-making processes;
  • Serves as a trusted strategic partner with the Registrar and with Senior Management, departmental leaders and academic administrators:
  • Engages in meaningful efforts to understand the diverse academic, research and operational needs of the University;
  • Provides clear, accurate assessment of legal issues and risks while respecting business judgement and decision-making authority of University administrators:
  • Represents the University’s interests on procedural and substantive matters;
  • Provides strategic advice concerning dispute and conflict resolution:
  • Conducts thorough and objective research, providing information and effective recommendations to the Registrar and other University clients;
  • Participates on Committees as assigned, representing the Office of the
  • Registrar in a professional manner that builds relationships, encourages inter-departmental collaboration and promotes the University’s strategic goals;
  • Determines the need for, develop and deliver, training programs to University clients as appropriate:
  • Liaises with University lawyers, and provides litigation support and management; and
  • Participates in professional development to maintain knowledge of changes to relevant laws and regulations, working with key stakeholders to understand the operational and procedural impacts such changes may have on the University.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A Master of Law (LLM) from an accredited university:
  • A member in good standing with the Law Society of Zimbabwe
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience practicing law, including at least 5 years’ prior experience in contracts and corporate commercial law, working with a variety of public and private sector clients;
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience practicing law, including at least 5 years’ prior experience in contracts and corporate commercial law, working with a variety of public and private sector clients;
  • Previous exposure to drafting and negotiating commercial contracts, construction, intellectual property, and insurance and procurement contracts would be an asset;
  • A breadth of general legal knowledge across a variety of fields;
  • Proven success in providing fair and impartial legal guidance regarding complex issues;
  • Prior experience in developing policies and procedures/guidelines in or for private or public sector organisation;
  • Experience in dispute resolution, mediation, arbitration, and enforcement of policies and procedures/guidelines; and Prior legal experience in a University setting would be an asset;
