Overview / Objectives of the position

The position holder will be responsible to primarily support the implementation of Emergency Cholera Response project in Harare and Manicaland provinces with especial focus and roles to accelerate sustainable improvement in access to water and sanitation and improved hygiene behaviors. He/she is responsible for the implementation of SBCC WASH-related initiative based on key theories, models, and frameworks. The outputs of the initiative will be to change social norms and behaviors in hygiene and sanitation, increase use of improved household sanitation, expand key hygiene behaviors at home, school and health facilities; and improve management of water supply and sanitation services.

The incumbent will work closely with government and community stakeholders to coordinate cholera response activities and ensure standardization of messages and avoid duplication of effort on SBCC. The SBCC Assistant will work closely with the other members of the WASH technical team on the design, planning, and implementation of a comprehensive SBCC strategy on WASH. The position also involves training and monitoring of community/sanitation agents on SBCC and to organize hygiene promotion and demand creation campaign to the communities on key Water, sanitation, and hygiene messages. Key components of the position also include developing and strengthening partnerships, monitoring and evaluation of response activities with a focus on behavior change through capacity development and fostering of change in social norms and behavior regarding WASH BCC interventions, gender equality and inclusion of people with disabilities the post holder will have the following key roles:

Main responsibilities:

  • Responsible to lead the implementation of the SBCC intervention in the cholera response and monitor and refine the strategy based on feedback. Prepare regular periodic project progress reports on SBCC in consultation with Emergency WASH Manager.
  • Contribute for the necessary data/ information gathering and assessments for the development of case stories and/or any documentations of outcomes of SBCC interventions at community level.
  • In charge of overseeing and supports technical requirements social behaviour change/demand creation activities related to expanding key hygiene behaviours at community, home, school, and health institutions in target areas.
  • Supervise, monitor the work of mobile awareness campaign services providers ensuring quality and high impact.
  • Build local capacity of district WASH offices, health extension workers, teachers, sanitation marketing producers and other local level actors in the programme target on implementation and evaluation of SBCC programming.
  • Supports the preparations and analysis of surveys to measure outcomes and program impacts related to SBCC to ensure quality project delivery at all levels of the project cycle management.
  • Monitors field project and training tracking sheet for accuracy and consistency of data on SBCC.
  • Monitors activities related to research and design leading to effective SBCC interventions.
  • Collaborate with team members to identify interventions and scale up best practices on SBCC.
  • Ensure the mainstreaming of Gender equality, Inclusion and DRR in the response project.
  • Manage and organize trainings, workshops and meetings related to SBCC and capacity building which are planned under the project at district and community level as appropriate.
  • Take the lead in the design and preparation of IEC/BCC materials; design/revise and preparation of SBCC in WASH guidelines/manuals; and ensure orientation, awareness creation of them and timely distributions to the targeted community and institutions.
  • Assist line manager with financial accountability for float requests, acquittals of floats and contribute to compilation of quarterly procurement plans.
  • Preparation of weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual programme reports.
  • Any other duties as directed by the line manager.

Requirements: Technical & Functional skills

  • Degree or above in public health, health promotion, Sociology or Psychology and with at least one-year relevant experience in Social Behaviour Change and Communication experience.
  • Good appreciation of SBCC projects, generating innovative and effective behaviour change or marketing solutions.
  • Knowledge of WASH projects with a focus on sanitation and hygiene, demand creation through CLTSH approach is preferred.
  • Experience in developing sound communication plans that include innovative strategies to address them.
  • Demonstrated competence in assessing priorities and in managing a variety of activities in a time-sensitive environment, and in meeting deadlines with attention to detail and quality.
  • Knowledge and implementation of behaviour change theory and experience in SBCC in WASH.
  • Strong knowledge of inclusion issues related to WASH diseases.
  • Fluency in English and Shona language is essential.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
