Job summary

Team Braunton is looking for a full and part time, Band 2, Health Care Assistant to join our friendly and supportive team. Braunton Ward is a 26 bed cardiology ward that specialises in heart failure. You will have opportunities to access local cardiology training and competencies as well as Trust wide development opportunities.

The post holder will be expected to demonstrate the ability to work alongside the Registered Nurses, providing high standards of care, whilst meeting the trust values. You will be given the opportunity to learn and develop all cardiac skills.

We provide a 24 hour, 7 day a week service for patients and therefore this role requires our staff to work a combination of days and nights including weekdays and weekends.

Main duties of the job

To Assist in the delivery of care planned and assessed by the Registered Nurses, and other registered health care professionals.

To carry out care and other duties under direct supervision.

Job responsibilities

Provide and deliver a high standard of nursing care (i.e washing, mouth care, toileting, feeding), recognising and meeting the specific needs of patients.

Prioritise own tasks under the direction of a registered nurse.

To carry out temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure observations on patients. Recognising, recording and reporting all changes in patients condition to senior staff.

To support maintenance of fluid balance and dietary charts, recognising, recording and reporting all adverse findings to senior staff.

Undertake the escort of patients to theatre/ other departments under the direction of the registered nurse when deemed competent.

To support the nutritional needs of patients by assisting with feeding and drinking, reporting any concerns about dietary intake to senior staff.

An awareness of skin integrity over pressure points, recognising and reporting all adverse findings to senior staff.

Document and sign for all observations and care given with counter signature from a registered practitioner.

To work with other team members within the ward nursing philosophy to ensure high standards of nursing care are delivered.

To maintain his/her own professional development, attending courses/ further training to enhance and optimise his/ her role within the work area.

To promote and safeguard the wellbeing of patients, their families and colleagues.

To share responsibility in the care and maintenance of all equipment on the ward and stock control.

To assist with the general cleanliness and tidiness of the ward.

To assist patients with listing and packing of property on discharge or transfer.

To respect the confidential information, in line with Trust policy and the Data Protection Act, obtained in the course of work and not disclose this information.

To be familiar with and adhere to Trust and departmental policies and procedures, mindful of responsibilities to self, colleagues and patients.

Report untoward incidents, complaints and clinical emergencies to senior staff.

Facilitate new staff to the ward environment, both trained and untrained.

Qualifications

Essential

  • GCSEs Grade A-C/4-9 in Maths and English or Functional Skills level 1 in Maths and English
  • NVQ level 2 in Health & Social Care or HCA UHP Level 2 or definitive evidence of working towards – 75% completed (or equivalent transferable qualification)
  • Demonstrable equivalent experience (NVQ Level 2 equivalent) as a Healthcare Assistant in a Band 2 clinical role and agree to undertake the HCA UHP L2 course. Willing to undertake a competency based assessment at interview.
  • Undertake and complete the Care Certificate training programme offered in-house
