Job summary

The role of an Endoscopy Senior Health Care Support Worker is assist, provide and maintain a high standard of patient care in the Endoscopy department for patients pre- peri- and post- procedure.

This role is a primary function in supporting the nursing team for the optimal care of our patients.

The delivery of high quality, effective and compassionate healthcare to the patients of Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust is the most important objective of the organisation.

Main duties of the job

The Endoscopy Theatres at the Andover Day Surgery Unit is a diverse, multidisciplinary environment which requires flexible and adaptable skills, an aptitude to learn and a motivation to develop your own skills.

You will be assisting in a vast range of endoscopy procedures which will include colonoscopy, gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy as well as generally working alongside the nursing team in recovery and discharge.

Decontamination will also play a part in your role, and you will support and assist the decontamination team when required, in providing a specialised decontamination of endoscopes. Therefore, it is vital that you acquire all the necessary skills & knowledge to be able to work independently in both environments within a very busy endoscopy unit.

The department offers a supportive and learning environment which endeavours to constantly develop the service, in order that its patients receive the highest quality and most up to date care.

This is a very patient-focused service, and the successful candidate will need excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work across a range of different endoscopy and decontamination environments as well as Recovery, Ophthalmology and ENT theatre. The primary base is Andover Hospital, although on occasion you may be required to work individual shifts at one of the other Trust sites if required.

About us

The Day Surgery Unit is expanding to create a second endoscopy room which will see an increase in our patient numbers. The aim of the nursing and ancillary staff in the Endoscopy unit is to provide a safe, caring and friendly service to the hospital and community.

The Endoscopy Service in day surgery provides colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and gastroscopy.

Person Specification

Training & Qualifications

Essential

  • NVQ level 3 or equivalent experience in Endoscopy/Decon/theatres
  • Maths & English (GCSE A-C)

Desirable

  • Endoscopy Experience

Experience & Knowledge

Essential

  • Previous experience in Endoscopy, Decontamination or Theatre settings
  • Able to demonstrate current knowledge and identify own learning needs

Desirable

  • Previous NHS experience

Skills & Ability

Essential

  • Good Communication skills, written and verbal
  • Shows self-motivation, initiative, flexibility, adaptability
  • Competent in cannulation, venepuncture and 12 lead ECG

Desirable

  • Knowledge of Nexus, HICCS
  • Knowledge of Endoscopy Scopes & Decontamination Companies
